Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1-Channel Home Theater System

by DVD Home Theater Review Team on January 23, 2012

Step up to 7.1-channel home entertainment with the Onkyo stamp of quality. The Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1-Channel Home Theater System gives you the flexibility to harness the two extra front-height channels of Dolby Pro Logic IIz. Now movies, games, and music come alive with atmosphere and realism. When it comes to set-up, Audyssey 2EQ ensures the surround soundstage is adjusted to the proportions of your living room. And thanks to the system’s HDMI functionality, you can take advantage of Onkyo’s convenient overlaid on-screen display to adjust settings with a minimum of fuss. Naturally, the receiver’s four HDMI inputs also handle 3D video and high-def audio from Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Other connectivity highlights include a handy front-panel USB input that lets you send a clean digital signal from your iPod/iPhone to the receiver, and front-panel analog A/V inputs for easy connection of a game console or camcorder. To provide greater bass impact without taxing the receiver, the package includes an independently powered subwoofer.

Pros
- Sound quality is very good, but finding the right sound mode for a source is imperative.
- Bass is incredible, I can feel the vibrations clear across the house when bass rich music is playing.
- LOTS of input options, I could hook up every piece of AV equipment I’ve ever owned.
- Lots of different sound modes to get a particular source sounding the way you want
- Audyssey was easy to use to get sound settings configured for my room and speaker setup
- Plenty of HDMI imputs as well as component and AV.
- Simple installation
- Free shipping

Cons
- It does not up convert non-HDMI video inputs to HDMI which I hadn’t thought of when buying this and wish I had.
- The Subwoofer gives off a quiet electrical hum, like power lines or old fluorescent lights.
- OSD only works with HDTV resolution signals 480, 720, 1080. Only bothersome due to my projector being 1280 x 800
- Speakers may be a bit large (Front speakers are more than a foot tall)
- Can’t connect to HD antennas

Klipsch CS-500 2.1 Home Theater System with DVD Player

by DVD Home Theater Review Team on January 23, 2012

**Note from Klipsch: We are aware of and have addressed the trouble with the DVD player portion of our Klipsch CS-500 2.1 Home Theater System with DVD Player . We recently (MAR-10) upgraded the DVD portion of the CS-500 to a much more robust and reliable mechanism (this includes units currently in-stock at Amazon). After recognizing the failure rate of the CS-500′s DVD section was not up to Klipsch standards, we implemented this upgrade at the factory-level.** Sleek, simple, and small the Klipsch CS-500 2.1 home theater system puts the ultimate cinema experience right into your living room with fewer wires and less components. By way of Dolby Virtual Speaker technology, this amazing compact setup delivers the effect of a large, 5.1 home theater system with just two satellites, a subwoofer, and an A/V center. Each magnetically shielded CS-500 satellite speaker employs dual 2.5″ high-output woofers and a 0.75″ horn-loaded tweeter. Our exclusive Tractrix(R) Horn technology is what allows this home theater system to deliver genuine lifelike sound as well as produce more output using less energy. The down-firing subwoofer utilizes a powerful 6.5″ woofer. The A/V center features a built-in Class D amplifier that distributes 35 watts of power to each satellite speaker and 100 watts of power to the subwoofer. It also includes Dolby Virtual Speaker technology along with a progressive scan DVD/CD player, AM/FM tuner, and three auxiliary inputs. The CS-500 home theater system even has the ability to pass high-definition signals through a component output and can simplify all of the auxiliary input connections into a single convenient output to the TV. An easy-to-use universal IR remote control directs all system functions as well as those of the TV and other entertainment devices.

Pros
- The sound from this system and easy connectivity were a big plus. 2.1 sound was good, solid base and good spoken word sound for movies/TV.
- Klipsch CS-500 produces a clear, excellent sound in a small-medium room.
- Crisp highs, mids, and lows were heard on low, middle and very loud volume settings, and the simple on-screen EQ adjustments were adequate to get the sound I wanted overall.
- The sound system is nicely made and looks outstanding.
- More pros here

Cons
- The remote is non-intuitive (channel up to skip DVD chapters?) and poorly designed.
- While watching TV or a DVD, dialogue is barely audible while music is blaring.
- Lacks an HDMI port.
