Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1-Channel Home Theater System

by DVD Home Theater Review Team on January 23, 2012

Step up to 7.1-channel home entertainment with the Onkyo stamp of quality. The Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1-Channel Home Theater System gives you the flexibility to harness the two extra front-height channels of Dolby Pro Logic IIz. Now movies, games, and music come alive with atmosphere and realism. When it comes to set-up, Audyssey 2EQ ensures the surround soundstage is adjusted to the proportions of your living room. And thanks to the system’s HDMI functionality, you can take advantage of Onkyo’s convenient overlaid on-screen display to adjust settings with a minimum of fuss. Naturally, the receiver’s four HDMI inputs also handle 3D video and high-def audio from Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Other connectivity highlights include a handy front-panel USB input that lets you send a clean digital signal from your iPod/iPhone to the receiver, and front-panel analog A/V inputs for easy connection of a game console or camcorder. To provide greater bass impact without taxing the receiver, the package includes an independently powered subwoofer.

Pros
- Sound quality is very good, but finding the right sound mode for a source is imperative.
- Bass is incredible, I can feel the vibrations clear across the house when bass rich music is playing.
- LOTS of input options, I could hook up every piece of AV equipment I’ve ever owned.
- Lots of different sound modes to get a particular source sounding the way you want
- Audyssey was easy to use to get sound settings configured for my room and speaker setup
- Plenty of HDMI imputs as well as component and AV.
- Simple installation
- Free shipping

Cons
- It does not up convert non-HDMI video inputs to HDMI which I hadn’t thought of when buying this and wish I had.
- The Subwoofer gives off a quiet electrical hum, like power lines or old fluorescent lights.
- OSD only works with HDTV resolution signals 480, 720, 1080. Only bothersome due to my projector being 1280 x 800
- Speakers may be a bit large (Front speakers are more than a foot tall)
- Can’t connect to HD antennas
